Cyberpunk 2077: Is A New Expansion Coming?

One of the most debated topics surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 has been the arrival of a new expansion from CDPR lately. Some news platforms as well as several Youtube channels suggested that there is something big coming for Cyberpunk 2077 in the near future.

But what is the source behind these claims? Is there an actual possibility of such a thing, after almost five years since the game’s release?

The Source of These Claims

There are a few different opinions on why there is a strong probability of a new expansion coming to Cyberpunk 2077. Let’s start with the 2025 earnings call.

CDPR 2025 Earnings Call

During CD Projekt RED’s 2025 earnings call, which is basically a conference for investors about the company’s estimated profits, CDPR stated that according to their Incentive Program, they plan to generate more profit during the 2025-2026 period compared to the 2023-2024 period.

CDPR 2025 Earnings Call Profit Goals

This is a fascinating and a quite bold claim by CDPR due to two reasons:

  • Also during this earnings call, CDPR stated that they are not planning on releasing Witcher 4 during this financial period.
  • The company aims to generate more profit than Phantom Liberty and Update 2.0 releases for Cyberpunk 2077, without releasing a new AAA title.

They stated during the earnings call that even though these goals can be considered ambitious, they are planning to reach them by depending on their RED 2.0 strategy, which simply aims to ensure to continuity of their IPs by releasing new content inside and around these IPs, such as game updates, TV/Online Series, and other projects.

New Partnerships By CDPR

We know that CDPR has partnered up with Anonymous Content for a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project, and they are also planning to release another anime series in collaboration with Netflix. However, there haven’t been many news or updates about these projects since they’ve been announced, which could mean that these projects are still quite early in development.

It is also known that there is at least one mobile game project related to CDPR’s IPs coming, in collaboration with the mobile game developer Scopely. However, we don’t even know the concept of this or these mobile games will be, or even which IP they will be featuring.

However, even if all these projects were to be released during this or the upcoming financial period, it would not even be close enough to reach the financial goals set by CDPR in our opinion, considering the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold over 8 million copies, generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Post-Release Development Cost for Cyberpunk 2077

There is one thing to take into consideration, however. CDPR has spent more than $175 million following Cyberpunk 2077’s release, for the development of the Phantom Liberty Expansion and the game updates. And if they decide to not release any more content for the game, it would mean that they would be keeping a larger portion of the money that they make, allowing for more profit.

To conclude the topic of this earnings call, most of the information we acquired from this event points to the release of something big that will possibly generate a lot of revenue for CDPR, which is why most people believe that there will be a new expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 REDstreams – 2.2 Update

During the REDstream that was featured by CDPR for the release of Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.2, the company has announced that they have outsourced this update, employing Virtuos Games for the development.

Update 2.2 Announcement Media for Cyberpunk 2077

This seemed quite strange and interesting to most, since Update 2.1 was planned to be the last update we would see from CDPR for Cyberpunk 2077, and they had announced that they moved on to other projects, concluding the updates for Cyberpunk 2077.

However, it would not make much sense to collaborate with an outside studio for a single update, since even the development environment for Cyberpunk 2077 is quite complicated and REDEngine, which is the game engine the game is developed on, is not a public game development engine and would require a lot of time to adapt to by an outside studio, especially for such a “small” update.

For this reason, many have speculated that CDPR may have tasked Virtuos Games with the development of new unreleased content for Cyberpunk 2077, whether it be another update or a full-on expansion.

What is another quite strange topic to us is how they ended this stream. Amelia Kołat, the Senior Community Manager for CD Projekt RED, said “And maybe we still have a surprise or two left for you”, before ending the stream. Which caused many people to believe that there are yet more to come for Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 Birthdays Calendar

On march 27th, the X account of Cyberpunk 2077 posted a photo with the text:

“Birthdays… They’ll creep up on you before you know it! That’s why we’ve prepped this Cyberpunk 2077 anniversaries and character birthdays cheatsheet! 🗓 Oh, and don’t worry about the encrypted data warning. Just a glitch in the system! Or is it?”

Cyberpunk 2077’s X Post

On the image, there are the birthdays of some of the most important characters from Cyberpunk 2077. However, there are six empty slots at the bottom of the table, with the title “Data Encrypted”.

While some people believed that this mysterious post was hinting at the new Live-Action project or the new anime for Cyberpunk 2077, some others believed that these 6 slots are reserved for upcoming characters to the game.

In our oppinion, it would not make much sense to feature the characters from either the live-action or the anime projects related to Cyberpunk 2077, since there are no characters from the anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners on the table.

However, we also think that it is quite near impossible for CDPR to release new content for the game that will be big enough to feature six new characters that are important enough to make it to this list.

Switch 2 And Mac Releases

With the release of the new handheld console Nintendo Switch 2, we know that CDPR is planning to release the Switch 2 port of the game on June 5th. In addition to this, it is also known that they will be releasing the Mac port of the game. Even though these releases will surely generate a notable profit for the company, it would not be nearly enough to set such ambitious goals as announced during the earnings call.

Conclusion

To answer the first question we have asked in this article: we don’t think that there will be a new expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.

It is important to note that none of the forementioned projects and releases are enough to justify such an ambitious goal set by CDPR for their estimated profits during 2025 and 2026. However, it is also not quite realistic to say that they are planning to release a new expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, since we know that the active development team for the game makes up less than 20% of the company’s workforce. The only explanation for such a plan would be outsourcing another development studio, as they did for Update 2.2.

However, we still think that something is coming for either Cyberpunk 2077 or The Witcher IPs, whether it be a new update for Cyberpunk 2077 such as Update 2.2 or a new collaboration with other companies that will generate profit for the company.

We might even see a new DLC for the game, featuring some new additions to the content such as new customization options, new vehicles, or new weapons. It is important to note here that in the perspective of CDPR, a DLC is not necessarily a big expansion with new gameplay elements and a new storyline added to the game. They identify such additions as “expansions” and they use the term “DLC” for smaller additions to the game.

At the end, we hope to see new high-quality content whether it be in the form of game updates, new IPs, or other media projects from CDPR, and we wish you a great day.
