Mafia: The Old Country is a prequel to the original Mafia trilogy, developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games.
The Story and Historical Setting
The publishers, 2K Games have confirmed that Mafia: The Old Country is set in early-1900s Sicily. The game follows a young man named Enzo Favara as he navigates through the dark world of the Mafia in the fictional town of San Celeste which was last seen in the 2010’s Mafia 2.
2K has also stated that “authenticity is at the heart” with “fully localized voice acting in Sicilian to match the setting and time period“.
What do we know about the main protagonist of Mafia: The Old Country?
Enzo Favara endured a harsh childhood, working in sulfur mines under brutal conditions.
Seeking a better life, he takes an opportunity to join the Sicilian Mafia, where he must prove his worth to the Cosa Nostra. Enzo Favara will do anything for the Torrisi crime family, leading him into various life-or-death situations.
His journey is filled with dangerous choices, vendettas, and battles for power.
Enzo Favara is voiced by Riccardo Frascari, an Italian actor known for his work in TV and theater.
His story unfolds in a linear narrative-driven format, focusing on stealth, gun, and knife fights.
The Gameplay
The game will be a single-player experience that primarily focuses on storytelling.
Unlike prior titles in the series, this game will not be open-world. Instead, the game follows a set, linear story with fixed missions. This decision was made so that every scene and mission can directly contribute to the story. This means you have a stronger focus on the narrative, making the game easier to follow.
Stealth plays a crucial role in the game
The game allows players to silently eliminate enemies using knives and environmental distractions. Enzo Favara, the protagonist, can sneak up on opponents for quick takedowns or use his blade for ranged silent kills. The game will blend stealth and action, rewarding players who approach situations with patience and precision.
The game also lets you experience period‑correct transportation. You will drive early cars and ride horses which is a nice touch and a fresh change for the series.
This will be the first Mafia game to feature horseback riding, marking a significant shift in the series’ approach to transportation.
The open-world exclusion news might be shocking to some, but we believe that it is not necessarily a bad choice. Although it may seem unusual, we shouldn’t dismiss the game just yet.
We can not form a solid opinion until we have tried it. Perhaps this decision benefits the game in ways we don’t yet understand. Only the developers know their true intent.
It is worth noting that the Mafia series, prior to Mafia 3, did not fully capitalize on the open-world format. Players had little to engage with outside of the main story.
The release date and platforms of Mafia: The Old Country
Mafia: The Old Country is set to launch on August 8, 2025.
It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and on PC via Steam.

The first Mafia: The Old Country trailer premiered at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, but the latest teaser, revealed on May 8, 2025, is the first to show full gameplay. It highlights Enzo Favara’s journey through the Sicilian Mafia, featuring horseback riding, sneaking through secret passages, intense shootouts, and high-speed car chases.
